He had this wonderful, large-hearted, Irish capacity to be afraid neither of celebration nor of sadness, and to really embrace both. I think part of why people in the Party were so loyal to him over the years was really because they felt that he had been quite loyal to them. He made them feel quite important as individuals. And it's a side of him that really hasn't emerged very much on the public domain.
